The most popular and easy to use GPS unit is called the GeoXT. It is a mapping grade, sub-meter accuracy, hand-held unit. RMBL has three of these units. All of them use Terrasync and Pathfinder software, and require post-processing. The GeoXT unit collects data in WGS84 Lat/Long which can be exported to a number of alternative coordinate systems, including UTM. The GeoXT does not use a localization and can collect data anywhere there is satellite coverage. The functions of this unit include: collecting point/lines/polygons, collecting attribute data, navigation, and creating offsets. The final product of the GeoXT includes the original data files, shapefile(s), and data dictionary files. RMBL’s most accurate GPS unit is called the Hiper Pro. It is a survey-grade, mm accuracy (15-20mm) unit which uses a base and rover. RMBL has one of these units. It uses TopCon TopSurv software, RTK collection, and does not require post-processing to obtain the millimeter accuracy. This unit collects data in ground coordinates and lat/long. This unit requires a minimum of 5 satellites, less than 4.0 PDOP, radio connection between receivers, and works within a localization. The functions of this unit include: collecting points, collecting attribute data, navigation, and creating offsets. The final products include a shapefile and text files. RMBL’s most accurate unit is not a GPS unit at all, but a conventional survey unit, using lasers and prisms. This unit has a 5-10 mm accuracy. It is not dependent on satellites, which is useful if you need to collect location information in an area where satellites are not available. This unit uses three pieces of hardware: the gun (shoots the laser), the foresight (prism), and the backsight (prism), and requires line of sight between the gun and the two prisms.
